The Bass Coast Shire is a local government area in Victoria, Australia, located in the south-eastern part of the state. It covers an area of 864 square kilometres (334 sq mi) and, at the 2011 Census, had a population of 29,614.[1] It includes the towns of Bass, Cape Paterson, Cape Woolamai, Cowes, Inverloch, Kilcunda, Lang Lang, Newhaven, Rhyll, San Remo, Summerlands and Wonthaggi. It also includes the popular tourist destination, Phillip Island. It was formed in 1994 from the amalgamation of the Shire of Bass, Shire of Phillip Island, Borough of Wonthaggi, and parts of the Shire of Woorayl, Shire of Korumburra and City of Cranbourne.
The Shire is governed and administered by the Bass Coast Shire Council; its seat of local government and administrative centre is located at the council headquarters in Wonthaggi, it also has a service centre located in Cowes. The Shire is named after its location on the coast of Bass Strait.
Phillip Island offers sheltered swimming beaches, renowned fishing hot spots and a rugged coastline for surfing. A popular summer getaway for Victorians, Phillip Island is an Australian island about 140 km (87 mi) south-southeast of Melbourne, Victoria. Named after Arthur Phillip, the first Governor of New South Wales, Phillip Island forms a natural breakwater for the shallow waters of the Western Port. It is 26 km (16 mi) long and 9 km (5.6 mi) wide, with an area of about 100 km2 (40 sq mi). It has 97 km (60 mi) of coastline and is part of the Bass Coast Shire. International tourists are attracted to the daily penguin parade and numerous motor sporting events at the local racing circuit.
Wonthaggi /ˈwɒnθæɡi/ is a seaside[2] town located 132 kilometres (82 mi) south east of Melbourne via the South Gippsland and Bass Highways, in the Bass Coast Shire of Gippsland, Victoria, Australia. Known originally for its coal mining it is now the largest town in South Gippsland, a regional area with extensive tourism, beef and dairy industries. At the 2011 census, it had a population of 4,354.[1]
The name "Wonthaggi" is an Australian Aboriginal name meaning "home" from the Bunurong (south-central Kulin). It was used in the area some time before 1 August 1910 when the town was founded.
